can one stop and restart the PTO of a round baler with a partial bale inside. as when moving from one field to another or should one just dump the partial bale and start fresh ??

I don't like to let a bale sit in the chamber any longer that 15-20 minutes. The bale can be hot from the moisture and pressure and cause a fire. The moisture from a bale will rust the sides of the baler. I also don't think that is good for the belts.

Only problem with doing this is if you happen to be using a tractor with leakage in the hydraulic system. Baled in the '70s with a 4020 with problems in the valve box; you had to bump the lever every couple of minutes to maintain pressure or the tail gate would come unlatched.....couldn't shut the tractor off with a partial bale in the chamber. This might not be a problem with some balers, or..... if your tractors are better maintained than mine.

There should be no problem with moving from one field to another-actually could do the same thing from one cutting to another, but I suspect that most of us just dump the last bale of each cutting, clean out the residue, and park it in the shed.

If the hay is good & dry I actually let a 1/3 bale sit in it overnight, but I bet that really isn't a good idea.

No problem for going down the road to the next place.
