Grease instead of gear oil in baler????

I have grease in my hay rake, can you do the same with a baler or for that matter sickle bar mowers??

I wonder why the manufactures even bother to make recommendations. Its apparent to me that people who put grease where gear oil is recommended have no intention of changing it. Why would you buy a tube of grease to use where its not recommended when you can buy a quart of gear lube for the same price? I guess the manufacture messed that up too. I suppose if the equipment breaks down that will be poor manufacturing.

Have been using John Deere corn head grease in gearboxes of my Woods bushog for years, no problems and its a whole lot easier adding small amount of grease verses changing the lower seal in a gearbox.

Don't know where you call home, but if you're in the "land ob cotton".....lots of folks use cotton picker spindle lube (grease) in gear boxes.

New Idea has an EP 0 grease for the gear boxes and cutter bars of their disc mowers. I use it in all my gear boxes. Not cheap at $6.99 (plus a 2.5% surchage for metal and oil prices)for a 14 oz tube but good stuff.

Check out outboard motor shaft grease. Another to check- Yamaha scooter enclosed chain grease. Low melting points, slow spreading gel when cool, minimal leaks from cracks/cover joints/seals, fairly liquid when warm, slightly sticky(Yamaha) clings to chains/gears/bearings/fingers. Soft Lithium grease another possibility-seen used on seed corn picker head chains/gear drives. RN.

I don't think the grease would work long-term. Eventually, the grease will be all pushed away from the gears and won't do any good.

If you have a small leak, you might look for a semi-fluid grease. It can be poured in like heavy oil (sort of like honey), but isn't as likely to leak out.

I took someones advice on here and got some snapper lawn mower transmission grease. its between a grease and an oil. to use in the gearbox of a 256 rake and it works great. if you squirt it out on something flat and then tilt the surface it will slowly run. its a little $$$ at $10 a quart.
