Field Cultivator

Can somebody out there enlighten me as to the purpose of a "field cultivator"? I'm familiar with row crop cultivators, but this is different. It is an AC snap coupler Coil Shank Field Cultivator. Were these any good? Anybody relate experience and/or advice?

The reason I ask is that I bought a WD45 a year ago for restoration/play farming. A neighbor down the road has one of the above, in original condition, that is to say, original paint, no cuts or welds or parts missing, rubber in need of replacement, that he'd be willing to part with for $350. It's sitting in a fence row and not being used. I thought his price was a little steep.

Any comments, advice, suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Robert; I have a front mount cultivator,heat houser,belt pulley all for a AC WD if that would be of any interest to you. I didn't want to see the stuff cut up. Rick

ShepFL; not sure what you mean't about friends e-mail wanting AC stuff. Have him go to www.ricksales.com and let me know. He will find other AC stuff under the site too. AC rotobaler,AC combine etc under antique catergory. Rick

A field cultivator is used for secondary tillage, just like a disc would be used. In fact, in corn/soy/small grain country, FC's are more popular than discs. Fewer repairs, etc. Discs are great for cutting sod chunks after plowing, but a FC with mounted harrow leaves a nice seedbed with one or two passes, incorporates fert/chem more uniformly, handles rocks better. I've always owned both, but the main machine for secondary tillage has always been the FC. Discs compact the soil- FC loosens it and pulls up the rocks- makes them ready to pick.

Thanks for the feedback, JMS. I can see the logic behind what you say. I think I'll go make an offer on the piece, even though it is a bit like putting the cart before the horse, as I'm not close to finishing the 45.
