Can anyone help provide diagram / advice / link to something that would show how to mount an antique Detroit Havester Sickle Bar Mower to a John Deer Tractor 3 Point Hitch?

What kind of John Deere tractor? All the Detroit mowers I have seen were designed for Ferguson-style 3-point (Ford N tractors, Ferguson TO-30, etc.) or for Case Eagle Hitch (VAC tractors, etc.) If you have a JD 2-cylinder, most likely you have cat. II hitch. If you have a newer JD tractor with cat. I hitch, your hitch dimensions may not be close enough to Ford-Ferguson dimensions to put the mower on. You may end up getting a different mower for your tractor.

They can hook up the mower to the tractor but the handle that raises and lowers the blade is a mystery to them (husband & brother in law). They have all the parts but don't know how to hook them up to work.

There is NO handle to raise and lower the blade, all done with the 3 point and NO it will not fit on a John Deere as it has to be mounted to the axle where the fenders bolt on on a Ford, the john Deere even if it is a 40-420 series you could not fasten it to the axle as there is no provision on those tractors that you could fabricate the mount for and that Mower has the 1 1/8" PTO shaft not the 1 3/8" on your John Deere, I have 3 of them and all the books, FORGET PUTTING IT ON and get you a corect mower
