Hi folks,

I just bought an old Judson lime spreader at a farm auction and it is missing the bottom "gate" for metering the lime.

It is 8' wide and the bottom holes are diamond shape. My question is: if I want to spread 2 tons of lime to the acre, do I need to close off the bottom holes a bit or can I leave them wide open?

(I'm not travelling far so I'm not worried about losing lime out the bottom going from field to field. The )

Thanks, Mark

Mark: You will probably need to cover field twice for 2 ton to the acre. I'm not familiar with the Judson however from your description, sounds not a lot different from eeze-flow, New Idea, etc. About a ton of that NS lime is all they will apply in one pass.

Thanks for the response Hugh. After shovelling 5 tons of lime into the spreader on Saturday I now have the experience to answer the question.

When the holes are open fully, 5 tons will cover 2 acres.

It's not the greatest spreader but for ten bucks at an auction and another $23 for tubes, it did the job.

I'm not sure how many trips I made from the lime pile, around the field, and back but if I had a nickle for every trip I could have paid someone to shovel for me.

Mark

Mark: I hope I didn't throw you off to badly. That is quite a bit heavier than my New Idea would do. About a ton per acre was the limit with it.
