NH 66 : Hay Dogs?

This must be the week for NH 66 questions :) It is too bad the archives are down.

I bought a 66 last fall, and it has been a good worker for first cutting. However, it is making the bales too dense (60 - 75 lbs @ 15% moisture grassy hay), even with the tension springs completely backed off.

The bale chamber has 3 pieces of angle iron (hay dogs?) on each side, to increase resistance to exit, and I suspect the last two sets were added by the previous owner because the bolts are pretty new.

Can anyone tell me how many hay dogs the 66 had originally?

Thanks,

Michael

The hay dogs are to keep the hay in the bale chamber and not spring back so the next push of the wadboard has a plact to push to, If you have it set on the 42" bale length that is the correct weight

any where from 0 to 3. Just depends on material you are baleing.

Thanks, Ted. I took two pairs out this evening, then ran some old bale material through, and it did seem to help.

There is a single wedge directly opposite the stationary knife (one without a mate). Is its mate missing? If not, is this wedge ever removed?

No, only on the one side. I have not ever seen any without it, but if it is still having too much friction, you could try it without it.
