HELP! AUGER STUCK IN CLAY!

Help, My 3 pt. auger is stuck in wet clay about 4 ft down.My Ford 800 is unable to lift it out with the 3 pt.lift. Any advice? would it damage the Bit if I pulled it out with a chain??

pipe wrench works and if it is an american pto you might be able to just slip the point of a crowbar right in the universal yoke. once it is out take it to an auction and buy a used post driver.

I have used the pipe wrench before. Used it right on the auger. Might need a cheater pipe. Works great. Sometimes your auger will thread past a large root before you realize it and it won't come out. If it is just stuck in the clay and you get it out you might want to just take little bites and raise it. They will screw in clay instead of dig sometimes if the conditions are right. Good Luck.

I stick mine in the clay all the time. The 3 pt probably can lift it out if you shorten the distance between the lift arms and the auger.
In short, I disconnect the auger from the digger. Then I take the digger off the tractor.
Then I take a chain and wrap it around the auger and hook the chain to one of those fixed drawbars that goes between the lift arms on your three point. With the arms lowered and the chain tight I raise the three point slowly. Never had it fail and I have been stuck really deep.

been there, done that also. a really big pipe wrench ( 36" or 48") is about the best option.

Find a bigger tractor, your going to need good size pipe wrench if your 4 foot down. RT

I have used a wrench on the pto shaft and turned it in reverse, auger will un screw from ground.

Been there.I tried rocking back and forth and ending up bending the shaft,so I WOULD NOT try the chain.Take it loose from the drive unit,then take the largest pipe wrench you have,put a pipe on the end of the handle for more leverage.Then turn it backwards.Once you get it moving it should come right out.

try putting a large pipe wrench on the auger and turn it backwards you may be hung up on a tree root or something

Put a lot of water into the hole and let it sit for a day. The clay will soften to a pudding consistency and you can then get it out easily.

that works good for drillin holes in dry ground too. start the hole and pour 5 gal. in it. next mornin it will be easier diggin.

now- as for that stuck bit, i'd fertilize it some by fall you ought to get a six footer when you pull it out!
