I decided to try and be as fair as I could and still not take it on the chin with the gas increase.
I just shook hands on a deal for One field in small squares aprox 6 acres at $1.50 a bale for the 1st 100 then $1.25 after that.
Then the back 25 acres in 5x6 rounds. $15.00 a bale for the 1st 35 then $10 bale after that.

$10 an acre for cutting here some have raised it to 10.50 this year. 4 or 5 for raking and 45 cent a bale to bale small squares. I don't know about big rounds but a lot of people here are going to big squares.

sounds about right i guess. I have been charging $6 for 5X6 round bales ( I don't mess with small squares) and $8 an acre for swathing. I have never charged anything if it rains and I have to rake because then I generaly rake 2 windrows together so it comes out to my advantage.

Am I reading that there is no raking in the process unless you get caught by the weather? Great Idea as you have to only make 2 trips to the field. It's hard for us to get a cure without at least one rolling over on sudan. Coastal bermuda could survive without it.

So light field @1 bale to acre = $14 per bale and dense at 4 would be 24+8/4 = $8 which averages to $12 like it is here @ $12 to $12.50 per bale for everything.

I guess no raking would be ok. The only thing is you are running your baler twice as much. More wear and tear on that.
I was going to try and talk my wife into raking in front of me. Get 2 rows into one.

I did that one time and I think she enjoyed it. Course I had to do the floors in the house in return. Yucko!

I personally like to rake as it gives the customer a more uniform cured bale. Course, when the hay is thin I agree in cutting the baler laps to a bare minimum. Sometimes I have had to put 5 together to get a decent roll.

Sure wish I could get that for baling. Competition sets me to $1.25 on the small squares (for cut, rake, and bale) and $8.00 to roll ($11.00 to do it all).

Cant get them all for that. But alot of these guys are waiting for a baler untill thier hay is to mature.
I promised that I would be there when he called.
So he is willing to pay for that.
