corn planter markers

On our white 5100 corn planter, the markers will not work right. The sequencing valve for the markers is in the same hyd circuit as the lift cylinder. The right marker will not go down at all and the left one will go down sometimes the whole way and sometimes only part way. Thanks for any ideas.

WHat kind of tractor are you using? Seriously this can make a difference, it has to do with back pressure in the return circuit of you remote valves. With my CIH cyclo-blow 900 hooked to my JD I have to remember NOT to hook to the priority valve. John Deere used to route return oil from the number one SCV into the line between the charge pump and the main pump. The 150+/- psi in that case was enough to hold the markers up until you applied 30# hand pressure to the markers to get them to drop. By hooking to any other SCV I did not have this problem.

Another possible culprit is that your marker hinges are stiff. Grease them, spray them with PB Blaster/ Liquid Wrench/ etc, or in a worst case scenario heat them with a torch if you can do so without destroying them. Also consider removing the pin and cleaning any rust out then slathering it in grease before reassembly. Hopefully this longwinded post will be of some use to someone. We were using an Oliver 1655, but we had trouble with the hydraulics. Last summer something happened that the hydraulic filter collapsed and pieces of the paper filter got in the system. A piece got stuck in the relief valve and we had no pressure so we switched to a NH TN75. Everything worked for an hour or so the the markers started acting up like I said. I tore the sequencing valve apart and found a piece of paper stuck in it. When I put it back together it didn't work any better. I fixed the Oliver and put it back on the planter and the markers still won't work. The dealer got me a used sequencing valve, I put it on and still no better.

One other thing, most times when you raise the planter, it sinks part way back down. Would one or both of the lift cylinders be leaking and cause the problem?

The markers move freely by hand and are not rusted.

We used to have the same planter. Our markers were seperate from the lift but we had the same probs too. I ended up taking the vlave apart not finding anything. It worked when I would idle the tractor. I don't know if it was to much hyd pressure when running at proper rpm. I guess it was a prob in all of them and the 6100 had a improvement and the valve could be replaced but it came with a price. I think it was 200-300 bucks for it. I never did replace it.
