I purchased a 271 from an auction and broke the needles the first time I tried to use it. Also sheared both shear pins. We put new needles on and spun the flywheel by hand many many times and see nothing wrong, needles don't touch any thing other than hay. We tried baling again and broke the needles again. I think they went all the way up to the knotters since the twine was in the knotter when they broke. Any ideas what they could have hit? Could timeing cause this if it was off? We are currently trying to locate and purchase a operators and/or service manual but not having much luck. Thank you...Paul in WI

Paul, Farmall Service just gave you good instructions. I do want to let you know that it is ALWAYS hay that breaks needles. The plunger NEVER touches them, even if you are out of time. Something broke that knotter shearbolt, and that is what started your whole mess. However, the safety latch obviously did not do it's duty either. Steve

STEP 1 make sure plunger crank is between the 2 stamped dots on the frame (should be on the side channel of the top part of the frame on the inspection hood)
STEP 2 make sure your stuffing rake is in time
(the nut that holds your chain together should be in between the 2 stamped marks on the frame behind the big inspection panel next to your knotter stack) STEP 3 pull your needles back to the home position
(brake should hold but not bind)
STEP 4 make sure your knotter dots line up ( if they don't line up disconnect your knotter chain and line them up then reconnect chain)
STEP 5 roll your flywheel by hand several revolutions before activating the knotters STEP 6 activate your knotters trip arm(pull up)
keep rolling by hand and watch your safety latch to make sure it goes in right after the plunger goes by then as your plunger is coming back your knotter should be doing its job when the plunger comes back around the safety should be out of the way as so should the needles (all back to the home position)
now hook to tractor and go baling
let me know if you need more info

here is a weird one, my 273 hayliner does not have the 2 stamped dots on the frame. It just doesnt. I had a NH mechanic over to help me time, and we went through my new manual from them and they just arent there and there is no evidence of grinding or wear.

Can any one explain that?

Stu, you are correct. All balers were supposed to, but every now and then I find one that simply does not. Don't worry about it, they are not that important. Steve

Thanks Steve, I will just go for vertical on the arm and time it that way. I may never need to time it if I keep my chains tight, fingers crossed.

I once checked out a web site that Kelly C whom post's here quite often has. It was about timing a Model 68 baler. The 271 is obviously different, but the timing fundementals are the same. I used copies of a 271 manual to set up my super 67. I think I still have those copies as well as a NH knotter manual. I would gladly send you copies of what I have.

However, if you can't wait check out Kelly's site. It might get you pointed in the right direction, If your baler is anything like mine, it should have a decal showing how to time the plunger under the respective cover and possible one in the twine box for the feeder timing(unless its worn away or painted over). I could explain to you how to do it in this post, but it would be quite lengthly. I'll check my folder of stuff and send you a pics/pages via email. You on dial-up or DSL/cable? I might be able to compress them for easy DL'ing.

Abosolutly. Timing needs to be down to a perfection.

Manual should not be that hard to find, NH dealer should be able to at least copy the page for you while waiting for your manual to arrive....

Checking the timing would be a good place to start. A previous post -NewHolland 69- has a phone number to get the manual. Also check the plunger stop- that it is well-lubed and functioning. It protects the needles from damage if they are in the chamber at the wrong time. If the pivot on the stop mechanism is like on the 268/9, it has TWO zerks on it, and must move freely.
