Rookie JD #5 Mower questions

Here is a picture of a #5 that is raised. Notice the "chain-like" lift linkage, which you can just make out against the lower part of the right rear tractor tire. Does yours have this linkage?

When the mower is in the operating position, the shoe is on the ground; when lifted, the shoe will be raised about 6 or 7 inches and the outer end of the bar should come up around 30" or so off the ground depending on the bow of the bar.

This "bow" of the bar has to be reset every once in awhile, especially if you are using the mower in heavy alfalfa because it will get to the point where the end of the bar will not lift.

To carry it down the road, you have to manually lift the bar to the vertical position and use the "carry rod" placed thru the bar and secured with it's wingnut. This 'carry rod' is normally stored at the frame of the mower.

Also, you say yours has a cylinder. Are you sure it is not a #7 mower?

You're right; she is one sweet looking old mower. But, it isn't mine.

I found the picture down in the implement photos.

Does yours have a cylinder on a #5? Seems like that would be a major change over for this model.

We traded for a #7 at this point to get the fast tach and the lift cylinder set-up.

Mine came with the manual lift. But it had the bracket for the cylinder put on it. This is a item in the parts book, so could be standard on latter #5's. I use a cylinder on mine.
