I looked at a 271 for sale for 1000 dollars. It seemed to be in good condition. What years were they built, and is this a fair price. He said he last used it two years ago and it worked fine.It had a bale that did not look quite full and the string was broke going to it.Is this a sign something is wrong or the string just got broke off from moving around?

Wife bought a 268 Hayliner for $750 last fall. Little scruffy looking, but good baler. Now she wants me to make hay! Seriously, I don't feel too badly used for the price. Makes great bales, we borrowed it and used it last year.

Bob,

I my area (the People's Republic of Connecticut) $1000 is not bad for a NH baler in the condition you described. I have a 270, in which I put about $800 in parts doing a recent rebuild. Great baler, simple to work on. As Paul stated, the 271 has a longer hitch and PTO shaft.

The pickup teeth are available from CNH. Be sure to check the ball bearing rollers in the pickup (they can be removed via an access hole on the RH side) and you may want to check the ball bearings on the plunger and feeder as well.

My 270 was built in '61. I had no problems getting all the parts I needed from my local CNH dealer.

Good luck!

Was it stored inside? I see them bringing $500 more often than $1000, but condition & trust will influence that a lot. I have a 270, same thing with the shorter hitch - excellent machine, lower volume than the new ones but mine is shed kept and has baled 5-6,000 bales a year for the last 40+ years with little problem.

I would not pay that for something that was stored outside. Tine was likely 'cut' with mice teeth....

It was stored inside,no rust and all original paint. It might be missing a couple of pickup teeth.
