What years were the John Deere #5 sickle mowers built? Is there any way to tell what year mine are?

John, I'm no expert on these but I know that my Dad bought a new one in the early/mid '40's and they were produced into the '50's but don't know any exact years. They could possibly have started production in the '30's. I've never seen a serial number on any #5 mower so I don't know how you could tell when one was produced. They all seem to be almost exactly alike with the exception of the length of bar, lift assembly, and hitch. Need any parts?

I have one that my great-grandfather bought in the early '30s, or so I have heard. I also have 3 more that I purchased from various sources, so i got plently of parts right now. Hopefully!. I am cutting hay now with two of these mowers. I just wondered about the year they were built. The four I have are almost exactly alike, some minor variations.

There are differences. Some big ones. I have a parts book for the #5. Frame for instance there are 2 different types. one with the angle crossing under the section with the caster wheel and one 1934- 1936 that is mounted on top with a diffent angle all together.
There are 3 different types of housings for the main drive. 34-36 againg being an oddball desighn.
Plus a V-Belt driven main drive 45-46.
And lets not even go there with the PTO Yokes!!!
Many kinds.
Interesting book.
