JD 246/247 planter

Spent sunday afternoon trying to get the above "gift" working. The sheet metal interior of one of the seed drops was bent badly at the bottom end. After straightening and a little trimming it now appears to work but do to tractor difficulties, discussed elsewhere, I was unable to test the implement on the ground. Is the only test the actual planting?

Lower it to engage drive wheels,and pull it across hard clean ground, I usually do it in the driveway in front of the shop, measure off 13'4". Count the number of seeds in that distance. Take the seed count and multiply that by 1000 if you are on 36" rows. and that will give you actual population per acre. Aaron

Pappy I lay down a cloth tarp or sheet and run planter over it, (for small seed) to check seed population and spacing. 246/247 are horse drawn right? Coaltrain

Thank you for your reply. 246/247 John Deere is a 3 point two row, made until the late 1950's, I think.

Made from early 50's, starting with the 40 tractor, the 246 is the corn version, 247 the cotton version, seed parts same with all 290, 490, 494, 1200 series plate planters

have not gotten around to checking, I have several on planters to rebuild for sale, that need new boxes but I think that the large round can seed hoppers from the later 494A type planters are the same diameter and that was what I was thinking about getting from a parts yard and using on mine

If Deere used a plastic Fert Box it was in the 7000 up planters

If you've got the bases, a sheet metal shop can roll you new cans to fit them. I'd get them to use stainless if possible.
