Could someone tell me what is a good sicklebar mower to cut hay with? I've cut mine this year with a JD model 39 and am not that impressed with it. Thank you

I HATE sickle bar mowers!!!!! I tried to use one for the 3rd and last time. It went to the sale barn last week like it's predecessors. It's either a swather or rotary cutter (behind the tractor in 3 pt only) period.

In my opinion, the balanced head sickle mowers offered by IHC in the 1980's - 1990's work real well.
I don't know if they are still in production.
I believe that the Rouse (Rowse) company in Burwell NE still makes a good mower.

Some prefer drum mowers since they don't clog up and you can keep moving, thus getting more done in a day.

I still prefer the sickle mowers though. Just call me hopelessly old fashioned.

Ernie, I mowed for years with a JD no. 5. I sold it and now have a disc mower. If I stay out of the ant hills it is the best mowing machine I have ever used. It will never plug up. I wouldn't buy a Lely though. There parts network is a disaster.

Don, I don't know if this will help with Lely parts but you can now get them from Vermeer dealers.

NH 451 is the standard but you would be better off looking at a new drum mower for close to the same price as a used NH 451.
