yesterday I looked at a vermeer round baler, I think it was a 504 I silage. its the first one I looked at up close, we don't see many around here. I was wondering, when looking at the baler from the front, why the twist in the center 2 belts???

Big Jim is exactly right. The twist is there so the operator can see the bale as it is started after about 2 or 3 feet you can't see it even with the twist in it. Then you watch the belts. They will track to the low side of the bale. The twist does not have to be there to run the baler. About half the people I know take the twist out especially if they are baling behind a twinrake.
FYI: That is most common question asked at the farmshows.

Joe,

That twist in the belts is so you can see the bale as it is being formed. With the newer balers, they put the belts really close together. I think this was to avoid hay catching along in the spaces between the belts as it did on some of the older balers. Maybe Hay Doctor or KY Hayman will correct me on this one? The 504 I is a real good well built baler. The silage edition is even better as its beefed up to handle wet hay.

It's hay season at CCM and just like Walmart at Christmas. Not really a time for visiting we are maxed out this time of year.
