We just got a 17 hoe John Deere drill with double disk openers and clutch lifts. As I was planting beans last week, I had a heck of a time getting the right side lift clutch to work. When I tripped it, it would come around about 3/4 of a turn but seemed to slip and just could not make it all the way around. Anybody have an idea what I should be looking for before I tear it apart? Thanks

Jeff:
Before you tear it apart. Try soaking it with diesel fuel. I had one that done that and I fought it for years. One day I decided to soak it with diesel and it has worked perfect for the last couple of years. These clutches get gummy and dirty and the parts do not work right. The diesel seams to soften this dirt and old dried grease up and help clean and lubricate them. It won't take much. Maybe a cup or so.

When my McCormick MF acts up, I make sure the grub screws holding the clutch drum are tight. If they are, loosen them up and clean the old grease, dirt and seeds out of the drum, lever and roller. Seeds are more of a problem if you are using the grass seeder without the little drop tubes.

It sounds like a weak or broken spring inside the hub that is driven by a flat chain connected to the the Jackshaft. You can look thru the opening in the hub to see the small trip dog spring. HTH.

Sounds like it is time to tear it apart as long as all external parts look like the one on the left side (rollers in place, no broken tips on the mechanism. After years of use and lube, might just need a good cleaning of old stiff grease, make sure the springs are there and in good shape, etc. Nothing broken internally.
