Been having problems with NH 273 making loose bales.
I'd like to keep the bales as small as possible but they're still loose no matter what size. I've tried adjusting the tensioners, going faster/slower etc. but it didn't help. The bigger ones are sort of banana shaped also. Operators manual doesn't give any clear solutions that I've seen. I'm new at this stuff. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. -Bob T.

Bob T,

I have an NH273 that works pretty well. As bstrucker said, I have found that I must rake at least two swaths from my Ford 501 sickle bar mower into each windrow before I bale. If I have good, full, large windrows, the bales come out tight and square. If I have small windrows, or if I allow the baler to run without having hay feeding into the baler, I get loose bales.

If you're not already doing so, I'd suggest that you try raking at least two swaths into a windrow and see if that helps.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

PS. I put up 280 bales of mixed fescue/clover yesterday. The bales were tight and basically square.

Have a NH 268 Hayliner. Previous owner had installed a pair of wedges in the sides of bale chamber. Makes excellent bales - tight, straight. Wedges look like a couple pieces of 3/4" angle iron bolted vertically along sides of bale chamber, open side to the outside. Works for me!

273's were always hard balers to get good bales from.Try feeding the baler faster, double or triple your windrows to get enough hay into the baler. You'll know when you are getting enough because then it will start to not tie .

check also for restrictors in the bale chamber, not sure how many in the 273. If bales are Banana shaped it uusually indicates too much hay in one side of the other of the chamber, You can vary the location of tines on tine bar and feed windrow in different aras of pickup. May also depend upon your hay, very dry grass makes poor bales.

NH balers do have that reputation, but check that the right number of hay dogs are in place, that they are not worn out. Experiment with different size windrows, maintain proper pto speed. Tension cranks should be adjusted properly, according to type and moisture of hay, time of day (weather).

Ignore the term 'hay dogs'. Dan called them by the right name- restrictors.
