I have a NH 460 mower/conditioner that I have been useing a hand ratchet on to raise and lower the head, I got a single acting cylinder at an auction yesterday for $17.50. Can I put it on and have it work, its getting old haveing to get off and raise it the hard way. And if I can will there be problems with it, I know it looks like it should be a double acting cylinder but will I be able to get by?? Thanks for any info.

I have a 460 and use a single acting cylinder.
It works fine.

Put the cylinder on there and try it, the worst that could happen would be that the cutter might not be heavy enough to drop, although that is unlikely, and the other thing would be if it drops too fast, but I doubt if that would happen either. My bet is that it will work just fine.

The single acting cylinder will work just fine with most tractors.

When you are lowering the mower, the port on the tractor that would hook to the other side of a double acting cylinder will be blocked, so the tractor hydraulics will "bypass" while you are lowering the mower.

Some tractors (notably closed-center Deere's) have a pressurized return system, where the function return oil is returned to the front pump, and this creates backpressure, making a single-acting cylinder drop slowly. Depending on the model, there may be a valve that can be changed on the hydraulic system, when using a single-acting cylinder. Your tractor's owner's manual often will tell you what to do (if anything) when using a single-acting cylinder.

Going to depend on your tractor, if it has single acting coupler???? You can use a double acting in a single system if you vent the other port, best to use a filter/vent dealy to keep the dirt out.

I use an Oliver 77 which is set up to use either type of cylinders. I just wasn't sure a single would work for the NH 460

Most conditioners I know of are or can be gravity drop, but I'm not familiar with your model exactly.
