JD 328 Baler - Bales linked together with uncut st

Neighbor that I do hay with has a 328 that was baling fine until yesterday. He was baling straw and the bales started having uncut straw link two bales together. It is on the top corner of the bale (Knife side) and no where else. The knives are sharp enough to shave with and the clearances are set to the minimum 0.075. We can not see how it is not getting cut. Any suggestions? This situation does not work well with an accumulator, believe me....

Add plungerhead extensions, if not already installed or if lost. They are angle iron pieces bolted to he face of the plungerhead. Also the other models (more expensive, 338 and 348), have additional hay dogs to prevent hay from following the plungerhead on the backstroke. They can be added. Usually only really long stemmed crops bother.

I had that trouble with an old new holland with long grass. There was a flap missing that hung down in the pick up chamber just before the hay went into the bale chamber.It was spring loaded to keep pushing down on the hay My temporary solution was to not crowd the baler as the hay seemed to be bending and was just barely going above the knives. I did not have this problem in short hay and sold the baler before another season. But I am pretty sure that flap missing was the source of my problem.

I've run into this a few times on my 336. Knives may need to be shimmed, too much gap. Slip clutches may be worn or slipping just a tiny bit. I get into this in wheat or timothy when the windrows are too big and I am force feeding the baler. Try having him slow down and use smaller windrows.

Jerry D,

Check to make sure that the plunger knife is completly moving past the stationary knife at that point. Might have picked up something like a short tree brach & dented the blade edges &/or just be wore & sharpened so many times that there is not sufficient blade left to completely close the gap.
