Which rotary cutter would you choose?....msg

My old (ancient) one is kaput so I need another rotary cutter. Please look over this list of possibles and tell me which would seem the best deal and which cutter is probably the most reliable:
new King Cutter 5' $545
~20 year old Sidewinder 5 1/2' $325
new Walace (Wallace?) 5' $575
Few year old Bush Hog Razorback 5' $590
new Bush Hot Razorback 5' $795
All are from reputable dealers.

What will you cut? The cheap ones are ok for clipping grass, but heavy brush causes vibration that rattles them apart. Servis Cyclone HD best I've ever had, but get what you pay for ($1700 new). 5' should be considerably cheaper than mine.

I wouldn't worry that much about it and just buy whatever you can afford. What happened to your old one? Everything is fixable.

I think it's fixable but it's a question of how old it is and that I have to ask friends to help me fix this stuff. It was an ancient model with the gears at the end of the drive shaft that goes into the PTO, rather than on the mower. The gear box burnt out and I know from the last time we had a major repair on it that parts are nearly impossible to find here. So I figure getting one that will actually work for more than 2 hours in a row would be a good thing!

Used cutters "usally" are junk or well on there way to being junk. Personally after useing a King Kutter i'd not own one. I've owned a Bush Hog cutter, and it wasn't my best purchase.

If it was me, i'd go buy a new Woods "Brush Bull" with slip clutch, and have it the rest of my life!!

I would go for the Bush Hog. Generally they are better built and usually easier to get parts for if you do break. Definitly get a slip clutch. If you havent already, shop around. Prices can vary alot from one dealer to the next. Dont by used unless you check it out well!

Personally I wouldnt buy a used one at all. No one trades them in unless they are used up.
What ever one you get I would get a new one.
I got a 5 foot King Kutter good enough for me.
I got one with the shear bolt. The torque from starting the pto can shear it real easy. Have to start her with the slowest rpm possable.
I will keep an eye out for a slip clutch on ebay to upgrade mine. Other than that its great. I love cutting up those saplings.

You can't just add the slip clutch. You have to have a splined gearbox input shaft to use a slip clutch. I checked with the factory.

I have seen some for the regular shaft. You just replace the grade 2 bolt with a grade 8 bolt when installing the clutch.

Thanks for the info. I've been wantin' a slip clutch drive line and was told that I would have to replace the gear box. Guess I'll have to look around for the type you are talking about. Thanks again.

I have a 5 foot King Kutter that I use to maintain about 50 acres routinely, and also clearing new areas. I use it hard, several times each month, cutting though brush and saplings, when I'm trying to clear new hayfields. This cutter has never let me down, and it sells for a great price. I highly reccomend the King Kutter. I've had it for 4 years, and I have never had to do anything to it, other than occasionally sharpen the blades.

If the Sidewinder is a tire drive model it would be the best built of those mentioned. We have a 6 1/2' wide Sidewinder tire drive mower that we have used hard behind a 150 hp tractor for over 10 years on only had to do normal maintance to it. I've never seen another mower built as heavy as the tire drives and they were built to mow whatever your tractor can push over.

I'd choose the one that looks like it would give me some useful service vs the price. Looks like you have a lot to choose from, you should be able to find a good match for your tractor. It comes down to which one has how much wear, so who other than you can say which is the better deal?

I'd probably look at the used Razorback, but depends on how many hours it has on it, and that doesn't mean I'd eleiminate any of the others...

Thanks, but I don't know much of anything about these. My ancient one that died was one I bought ancient last year, got about 3 hours work out of it, and it was my first one. I guess what I'd like to know is what of those brands holds up longer, wears better, is considered a 'good' item to have.
Do you have any ideas what of those are better units?

Squealer. (Cheaper build of the Razorback, but from the same good company.)

I am not familiar with Allis, don't know who made it for them. Probably good but I don't know.

The King Kutter is probably the cheapest, closely followed by Walice.
