Hello to all Am using a 477 haybine for the first time. The machine cuts great but noticed it is not crimping the cut grasses.(Mainly fescue so far)Have adjusted the roll pressure cranks according to the operators manual.(CC for more crimp pressure)Have turned the cranks CC until they stop turning, then got under machine and checked gap in rolls.Still have 1/8 to 3/16 gap.Rolls appear to be in good condition and still have all of the lug material remaining,i.e. no chunks missing. Any ideas? Thanks Mike

Steve-does that aply to 488 also? The manual I have makes no mention of those shms. I've assumed for years that it is just the nature of the beast. It would be so nice to have it actually crimping.

Yes indeed!! All New Holland haybines have shims to remove to allow the rolls to come closer together to compensate for wear. This is how you make a haybine crimp better, NOT by tightening the crank handles. Steve

Hi Mike. Adjusting the cranks will not do anything for you. Once set, they do not need to be adjusted. Proper setting is to loosen them all the way, and then start to tighten them. Eight turns of tension cranks is all you need. Now, to solve your crimping problem: There are shims that you need to remove from the top roll resting area on both sides. Remove enough shims to bring the rolls as close together as possibe without them touching each other. Hope this helps, Steve

Steve from NH: - Do these same shims you are speaking about exist on a NH469? Sorta got the same problem with my 469.

You bet Tom, all New Holland haybines have shims. Check between your rolls. If the gap is more than an 1/8" at their closest point, they need to be set closer. Tightening the crank handles does absolutely nothing, Steve

Steve, thanks a million for the info. Will definetly check this out as I do need to get the rolls closer together. Your mention on the 8 turns max on tension screws was a real help also; sounds like it is really a 'set it and forget it' situation. Many thanks!
