I bought a Hesston 5540 baler over the weekend.
Checking to see where to get any parts needed.

Would like to get a sprocket on the pickup drive.

Located in Missouri.

Hey guys, how do you like your Hesston? I bought a 5580 rounder a couple of years ago and it's nothing fancy, works fair but only paid $2500 for it. Figured I could tolerate a little manual control for that.

Since this is the first year with my 5500 I'll be able to tell you in 2-3 weeks. LOL. Mine dosen't have the big lower feed belts, so I assume that it's considered a "Open Throat" baler. I have a good friend that has a 5500 and loves his. I'm only going to bale 50-80 bales a year, so this seemed like the best Bang for the Buck. I give $1,950 (delivered) for mine with very good belts and overall good condition.

Sounds great.

Are you familiar with open vs closed throat (since you mentioned it) and what are the benefits of each?

I'm a 6th generation NW MO tobacco farmer, but a novice at hay balers but this is how I understand it. The older balers were "Closed" throat, which means that there were big feeding belts at the bottom of the bale chamber just behind the pick-up reel as well as the forming belts. These were more temperamental as far as how dry the hay had to be. The newer "Open" throat balers didn't have these bottom belts which let you bale hay with a higher moisture content. There are people on this forum that can tell you much more than I can on this subject, so I hope I haven't given you any wrong information.
