How do I replace gear box seal on NH 56 rake?

Can someone walk me through replacing the oil seal on an NH 56 gearbox. We've been using heavier and heavier gear oil but finally ran out of choices.

I have 2 model 56 rakes and have mine packed with grease. Works fine and have not had any problems that I know of in regards to lubrication. Takes about 2 tubes to fill it up. Would be interested in the other greases that have been mentioned too though. As far as seal replacement, there is nothing too it. just have to pop the drive in cap off the opposite side, diassemble the input shaft and drive line out of the gearbox and replace it. Its pretty self explanitory once you take the cover off and see what it looks like. Might even want to take a picture of it before diassambly.

You still have one: Lubriplate brand 105 engine rebuilding grease. It is the typical white Lubriplate product with a viscosity somewhere between 90w and grease. Just thick enough to stay and thin enough to sling.

Been using it in my NH (Model?) rake for 3 yrs and haven't had to add, when 90w ran out.

like everyone else said, pack it with grease and forget it. much easier and cheaper.

Per Service Bulletin # SSD-212 dated Aug 9 1976.
All rake gear boxes should be filled with 2 cartrages Approx 2 pounds of greese instead of gear oil.

Get you some EP-0 grease and forget replacing the seals. The EP-0 is a semi-fluid grease and works fine for that application. We have done hundreds of those rakes traded in just because of that same oil leak problem and the rakes do not give trouble after the EP-0 is added. This grease can be found at a Snapper dealer. THe EP-0 is used in their transmission.

Don't! Those seals are a pain to replace and will be leaking not too long after you replace it. Take the cover off of it and pack it with grease. I am not sure how muc to use, but I know a lot of them that have been done like this and have lasted for years.
