Followup to crusted soil

I had a small section of a planted sunflower field for doves crusted over. The ground wouldn't break when I walked on it. So I used the two row planter (w/o drive chain) and went over the field again while driving in the previous tracks from when I planted. I also adjusted the planter to only go down an inch. It broke the crust into marble to walnut sized clods.

2 days later I am seeing lots of germinating flowers in the rows that I broke the crust. There are few to none seedlings that have broken through the unbroken crust.

That is good to hear. When those sunflowers get up are you just going to whack with a bush hog to get the dove in? Just curious as that might be a consideration for me and my boys.

yes, i'm going to whack it with a brush hog near the end of august. the state manages some land specifically for dove hunting, it's all sunflowers (and officially named Dove Flats). they bush hog it near the end of august too. plenty of doves use it, and so do plenty of hunters. it lasts a few weeks then the birds quit using the area because of all the hunting pressure.
