My father has an old IH hay mower which we "think" is a model 9. He bought it about thirty years ago to clear a field for our horses to graze in. I remember that the mower was old even back then (I was a young kid- 10 or so). Anyway, suburban sprawl has caught-up with Dad's place, and he's trying to sell the hay mower. I have pictures of it, and was going to put it out on ebay, but I found this place first.

Does anyone know if this particular model is worth anything more than scrap? If needed, I would be more than happy to send a picture or two to help with identification. Also, if this is the wrong place to ask this question, please, can someone tell me where I can go?

Thank You for any and all help/advice!

Jim

Jim,

Looking at the gear box cover and the wheel hubs I would have to say it is a #9 McCormick-Deering. The best way to tell is to look on top of the tool box cover. The model number will be there. The tool box cover will also tell you what kind of gearing it has. It will say "Regular", "High", or "Trailer" gearing.

As for the value, it depends on the overall condition, the length of the sickle bar but most of all it depends on the gearing. Regular gearing brings the lowest and the Trailer gearing being the highest.

You can still get after marker parts for them old girls. You even can get complete sickle bars for around $300.

As for the value of your mower I would have to say it is worth more than the junk price. I have picked up #9 mowers for $75 in rough shape for parts all the way to my #9 regular geared with a 6 foot sickle bar on rubber tires in working condition for $325. If yours has trailer gearing I wouldn't sell it for less than $300.

If you have any other questions feel free to contact me. I will do my best to answer them for you.

My 2 bits worth,

Old Iron

My dad had a trailer type international 7' sickle mower that we used from about 1960 to `1974 and then bought a 990 international mowerconditioner. They were both very trouble free and reliable units.

Old Iron-
Thank You for the comments and advice. I have a picture of the toolbox cover, as you can see.

As for the sickle bar, if memory serves it is a six footer, but it is seized with rust right now. Everything else works just fine.

I will forward this thread in an email link to my father. He has an interested buyer, and your input will help him considerably!

Thank You.

Jim

Hey, so that's what the frame in the grove is from! All I have tho.

Your are likely to just get scrap iron price for it, unless you are willing to find the right market - an Amish community or several collectors. The market for this type of thing is to highly variable.

The model 9 is a steel wheel horse drawn mower, may have had a tractor toung installed at factory, a very few were made with rubber tires, any no. 9 in an amish area is worth quite a bit, even if only for parts, second in value only to a John Deere Big 4 mower and those will bring in up to the $ thousand range

Hey Jim, just a heads up.... since you are new to this forum.... watch out for the scammers that watch the ads on these tractor forums!

Do a search of these forums for the word "scam" {there will be a lot to read about} and learn what to look for so you won't get caught short by some of those crooks!

Good luck!

Thanks for the heads-up!

Yes, I'm new here, but I'm not new to the web, or scams. I would not reccomend anyone "try" me with a scam. I know what I'm about out here, ok?

As for the mower, we haven't got the mower posted anywhere. It's just sitting in Dad's front yard w/a "For Sale" sign on it. He doesn't know what to ask for it, so I told him I'd do a little checking around.

Thanks for the reply, and the advice!
