A 1240 is a alright planter but a 7000 is a lot better. And a four row planter isn't high priced, well worth the extra over a 1240.

Dan, this post won't help much because I've heard both ways. When Dad bought a 1240 I can remember the dealer steering him away from the plateless. The dealer claimed the plateless gummed up and caused trouble. A friend of mine had a 1240 plateless and claimed it worked good. I have also heard that two types were made. The early ones caused trouble and the later ones worked good. But, I don't know the difference. Sorry that I cannot be of more help. Be sure to post on the JD board.
