IH 76 Combine Questions

I'm going to be taking a look at an IH 76 combine in a couple of days, and am wondering what things to look out for (other than the canvas condition, which I already know is not good). What's the general opinion of this model?

Are parts, such as belts, etc., still available?

What would the price of a new set of canvas for a 76? I am in SW Wisconsin, so might check to see if any Amish or Mennonite might be able to help.

My uncle has a model 76 and his experience has been that the crop has to be clean and quite dry to avoid straw and grass from wrapping on the straw beater and jamming the combine. He installed a pickup on the combine and swaths all cereal or grass crops with a 10' IH 175 swather and lets it dry completely to ensure smooth combining. He ordered an OEM canvas from an IH dealer a few years ago and paid around $500(CAN) for it. He�s replaced many of the belts and several of the bearings and they were readily available. For modest acreages, it performs quite well when used with a pickup. On the other hand, direct combining may test your patience. If it has been stored indoors, rust isn't a problem but if it's been left out in the weather, the check the bottom pan for rust out.

I would say the Canvas will start at around $500. Lots of parts are going to be hard to come by. My IH - "82,s" built in the 70's are a problem getting parts for! Belts should not be an issue; But Metals components probably will be (at least from Case - IH)

I dont know that I have seen one actually run so dont know about how good they are! What I do know is that according to some books I have that there were VERY FEW MADE!!!

The Book "150 Years of International Harvester" by C.H. Wendel says there were only 750 built between 1956 -57. Needless to say used parts might be a nightmare; But You will have a rarity indeed!
