Any of you guys making hay yet this year? I'm one of the weekenders and we've had rain every weekend now for a while. I've got neighbors biting at the bits wanting to get going. I usually bale for them but this weather is holding up the boat for us. How about you guys?

Snowed here with a uncommon late season storm last Monday. Winter wheat is greened up and 2" tall. Willow leaves are just the size of a squirrels ear yet. Grass in the pasture is just 3-4" tall yet.

Hey txblu. What part of N. Texas do you live? I lived in Borger for a while. Pretty close to Amarillo. Friends up there were telling me big round bales were selling for ~$50 this past winter.

Here is So. Central Missouri its just right. Cut fescue & clover yesterday and will cut alfalfa & brome today. Forecast is for plenty of sun aand low humidity for the next 5 days. All of it is about knee high. Orchard grass is about 2 weeks behind. I hope to get done before late May rains start..... Good luck to everyone.

It's still way too early here in upstate New York. Depending on the weather, we may be baling in another month.

Got a couple of hundred bales still in the field with 3 days of rain on it..... Weather man said it would not rain until late evening but it started at 9:30 am. Trying to get a bit more moisture out of it and lost... Oh well the straw choppers will pay $3 a bale for it anyhow...

We just barely fired up the irrigation sprinklers. Alfalfa is still not up to my shoe-tops. Occasionally still have to scrape my windshield in the morning. Nice and warm today, though! End of June is our first cut time. We ususally only get 3 cuts a year. 5400 feet elevation.

Grass & alfalfa is about 4" high here, wouldn't seem worthwhile yet! Was 27 degrees last night. First on June we'll be thinking about hay. Need to finish the corn (first field is poking through) and then deal with beans.

Paul is it dry down by you? I am getting worried up here. Might be lucky to get 2 cuttings in again.

It's real dry, We caught about an inch last month, a very dry April after almost no snowpack but I live in a real wet area, farm is 15% peat bog, so I love dry. By the time it hurts me, crop prices are _way_ up and it is a whole lot more fun farming dry dirt than fighting the ^$#% mud I dealt with during the 90s.

That doesn't mean I don't feel for those that are too dry to start with & really suffer with a drought - just the shoe on the other foot.....

I have some neighbors with beans in the ground, one is all done with about a thousand acres of corn AND BEANS! Slightly lighter soil, but only two miles south of me. And we live 90 miles north of you- had some snowflakes Sunday morning! Trees are mostly budded out, hayfields are finally green but not much height yet.

Some are starting beans this week. I still have 12 acres of corn to plant, was going to in this big bright moonlight, but the hose in the 7000 frame burst so have to find one in the morning, see if the showers stay away until nite.

I noticed the record low for yesterday 'here' was 19 degrees in 1967. Guess they weren't in quite such a hurry back then. Dad would not start planting corn until May 9th, and he was about average back then. Now they look at you if you are still in corn in May at all....

Paul, I get "the look" here too for planting corn in mid-May instead of mid-April. I had one guy say to me that he plants in April because he'd "rather be replanting corn in May than in June". I told him that in the 12 years I'd been doing corn, and the 50 years my grandfather did corn before me, that NONE of our May planted corn had ever needed a replant. His early corn has never outyielded my later corn by more than a couple bushels an acre, so unless you're trying to cover lots of acres (which he isn't), what's the point?

It's cloudy and cool here (in the 50's), supposed to be in the 80's this weekend. We started cutting wheat and alfalfa yesterday for round bale silage. Got about 45 acres of each to get, the rest I'l wait a couple of weeks (at least) for dry hay.

Rains every third day here. Haven't planted any corn or beans yet, still trying to get the last 10 acres of oats in. Orchardgrass is getting ready to head, it's 2 weeks early for these parts. I couldn't make it anyway, so it'll just have to wait.
