Which do you guys think will be best. I mow a few acres each week. It seems to take all day with the 14 hp Wheel horse. I'm considering buying a 3pt finish mower for my '51 Ferguson TO-30. I could also buy a pull behind mower to my ATV. Both are much wider cuts than the lawn tractor. My mowing is on gentle hills and flat. Just thought I'd see what you guys think.
Thanks in advance for you time.

Well, the 3pt with a tractor will do a good job. I have an 8hp 42" Haban towbehind, that I pull behind a Deere 140 hydrostatic (souped up to 18hp with a new motor), that does a great job. I have even attacked 60 acres of rough hayland with that setup, and goten along well. Guess you takes your choice! I can cut faster with the Deere/Haban than with a Farmall 300 and a 5'generic brushog.

Thanks for the input. A couple good points were raised I hadn't thought about.

I have a 5' Woods finish mower that I use with my 1951 TO-20 Ferguson. It is an excellent combination. It hooks up easily and does a good job around the yard or in a field that I keep mowed. I almost wish that I had a 6' mower as the tractor would handle it easily. The only draw back would be the extra precautions around the yard with the mower sticking outside of the wheels.

if you buy a pull behind hook it to the wheel horse and mow even wider strips

There you go. Set up an offset hitch and drag her along. That C14X should handle the pull along with probably a 42" deck with little problem.

I pull a Swisher T60 behind a JD212 and mow about 5 acres. Tow mower eliminates need for sharp turns, allows cutting under tree overhangs, is stable on slopes, trims nicely along foundations and tree trunks.
Swisher with 13HP WAY underpowered and must be used with a puller that can stop instantly and have very low speed capability as the Swisher will bog and stall quickly when overloaded. That means stopping, getting off and restarting. 17HP should be about right power. The rigs do a nice "finish" job. My ground is rough and so I don't want to go fast. Am thinking of pulling two tow behinds, but would like to have the extra one discharge to the left!

Having used a 60" finish mower for 20+ years, I can't say enough good about them. You wind up with a lawn mower that is as powerful as the tractor pulling it....it doesn't bog down or choke. Maintained with an occassional greasing and blade sharpening, they really do the work. Being able to raise and lower the implement is wonderful and it is essentially as reliable as your tractor is. I have a 4 wheeler and it is a great riding tool, but a tractor it isn't. Speed control for long periods of time is a factor....consider your poor thumb! Think why farmers wanted a 3 point hitch instead of pull type implements...that is what you have behind a 4 wheeler and then you have that small (in comparison) B&S or Kohler engine running the mower. Buy a finish mower, you won't be sorry.

I've used both, and can't say that it makes much difference, so it's pretty much personal perference. My Dad has a 60" 3 pt finising mower on his NAA Ford, and I've got a 60" Swisher that I pull behind my ATV. The 3 pt is more manueverable, but the tractor is a lot bigger, so it's pretty much a wash. You've got an extra engine to maintain on the pull type. The pull types aren't very well suited to pull any distance for transport. Price should be about the same.

Been running a 7' finishing mower on the back of my IH484 for 12 months now - love it. As others have already said, only one engine to worry about and put fuel in which makes a difference here in the UK. I can mow my 5 acres with my diesel IH for much less money than it costs me to cut the small lawn with my petrol lawn tractor!
