Grain drill doulble disc

Hello, Does anyone know how to get the double disc off of a IHC model 10 grain drill? I can get the nut off of each side but it just looks like it is there to hold the grease in. Thanks

John, they turn off, its been a long time since I've taken one off, if I recall I used to soak them with oil so the discs turned freely then clamp a vise grip to the disc and turn it backwards screwing it off of the hub, JMS has the right idea, I think they are threaded opposite of their turning( the disc will tend to tighten as it rolls through the seed bed) so turn it backwards and the left side and right side will be threaded to turn back the same direction...I've probably confused you totally...I recall having to take the torch to heat the centres of seized discs, dousing cold water on them and then turning them off....good luck, I still have our old Mc Cormick double disc drill#10..Mike in Exeter Ontario

Thank you all. I got them off. It takes a 7/16" allen wrench if anyone else ever happens to need the same thing.

They turn freely right now but I want to take them off to put on some depth guides. I took the nut off of each side of the disc and they turn but I cannot get them off of the shaft they are turning on. Thanks

You need a large hex (allen-type) wrench. Stick it in there, and turn in the _opposite_ direction the blade normally travels (1/2 are lefthanded, 1/2 are righthanded). The blade will not spin, or is not important if it does. They can be in real tight, and are a strange little cast screw piece.

My old Case corn planter needed a square shaft to turn them out, but the IHC drill is a hex. Flush out the oil & dirt, and you should see the hex hole you need to fit. An oddball old ratchet set I have happens to us a hex drive that is just the size needed. Otherwise you will need to go on a large allen wrench search....

Don't know about the IH, but a JD 8300 has hex socket head bolts- one left-handed, the other side is a right-handed. If you clean out all the grease, the attachment system might be obvious, and if is nutted or bolted, the left one is likely to be left-handed- keeps it from unscrewing while in operation.
