Splicing wire - how to make it smooth?

I'm a baler newbie...first time ever will be this weekend with a JD 214 WS wire-tie baler baling grass hay. What's the best way to splice the new roll of wire into the one that runs out to keep the splice smooth enough to not cause jams in the mechanism? Being a fly fisherman, I know all kinds of knots that result in a very smooth, small knot, but baling wire isn't monofilament, and I'm sure there are lots of well known ways to do it.

Thanks!

Chuck,

What works best on my NH 275 is the wire splicing tool. Short of that three pair of vise-grips would suffice. The splice consists of overlapping the two ends two inches in a nose to tail formation (nose to nose will NOT work, trust me), then holding each end tightly to the other wire with the U-shaped piece of the tool, or two pair of vise grips, then rotating the center of the overlap with the straight-tool, or the third pair of vise-grips. Four twists is about right, just don't over-, or under-twist the wire to prevent breakage or unraveling. E-mail me for more advice, I'm willing to share what little I do know.

Jeff...thanks! I tried with just pliers and it worked, but not pretty, and not likely to be consistently good, so better find a tool or get some more vise grips.

Ted...for what it's worth, not in the manual.

Thanks all!

Thank you gentlemen...I will check the manual, but also Dan WA's description sounds pretty easy to follow. Never thought of the manual...I've been through it several times, but must have simply missed it, or saw it and forgot. Baler is very old and a hand-me-down from a friend, so even missing important stuff (runout chute for exzample), let alone a wire tool.

It is also in the owners manual.

There was a tool to do this in the old days, maybe baler even came with them. If you hold ends side by side, end to end, about 2 inch overlap or a little more. Hold center of pair with pliers. twist each end around the other wife. As mentioned the book shows it. Key is enough twists to keep wires together but tight enough to go through guides.

I have a very similar baler (twine) and the instructions for splicing are on the inside of the twine box, if memory serves me. If they are not there, then look in the manual. I remember seeing this info in one of those two places. Sorry I can't be of more help, baler is still stored away and the manual is not in my hands at the moment.
