I am looking to buy a light duty brush hog, just bought a new New Holland tc30 tractor. I dont know much about farm equipment and was wonting some of you guys to let me know what the best would be for me to use, Woods or Landpride? To be honest I already have a brush hog, its a King Kutter and it works wonderful for me, but I read some of the post that people put on here and alot of people said they where no good. All im going to be cutting with it is field grass, nothing more no saplings no type of trees at all, the grass is head high though. Its 48 acres of it and my King Kutter is 5 foot, will be cutting the field once a year, maybe twice. I just trust Woods or landpride more I just dont know if the King Kutter will hold up cutting 48 acres of grass or will it the King Kutter is new by the way.

Thanks Trey

Trey,

48 acres? I think I'd be for getting a 9' sickle mower for that, unless of course, you need a finished look to it.

Seems like a lot of real estate to be tending with a rotary.

Just my 2 cents,

Allan

I like the finished look to be honest,I cant afford a bigger tractor thats for sure, im in college now. When I get out of college and start a good job im gonna get a 80 horse tractor, that way i can take care of all the cutting quicker, gonna keep my little tractor for our garden and useing a finishing mower.

From what you're describing, you won't hurt ANY brand of mower. Light duty mowers show their weakness when put to the test of mowing saplings, hitting rocks and stumps, and general "abuse". Take care of the gearbox, and you'll get many a good year out of the King Kutter mower. If you put it behind a "high-horsepower tractor", you might do damage to it also. NEVER exceed the rated horsepower on the gearbox. Even with Woods, Bush Hog, Land Pride, or any of the other "more expensive" brands, they have different levels of mowers. Light, medium, and heavy duty. The cost goes up quick, as the duty rating climbs. I have a "medium duty" Woods mower, that cost around $1500 (6') and a heavy duty Bush Hog (7') that cost nearly $3000. You get what you pay for. (Most of the time). Bottom line; Keep your King Kutter, and take care of it. It should last you quite a while. John

The biggest consideration with mowers is the gear box/drivetrain. It will not matter what the deck looks like in a few years if the gear box is toast. From exeperience I can tell you that with most mowers the deck will outlast the drivetrain. So when ever you get to the point of buying one pay close attention to that. Look for a good slip clutch and not a shear pin setup. Check the HP rating of the gear box. And last but not least remember to service the gearbox/drivetrain regularly.

On most units changing the oil is close to impossible. Depending on your usage every couple years. The main thing is to check it before each use. It is hard to tell when the seal goes bad in the bottom and it wont go long w/o oil. The other thing is greaseing the shaft with a good quaility grease DAILY. All u-joints and the sliding area of the shaft. To add to that whatever tractor you get be sure and preform all the maintenance as show in its manual. If you maintain you equipment properly it will last alot longer and give you alot less trouble. Happy mowing.

I found a way to change gear box oil,I found this small thing in Northern Tools and Equipment that draws it out by suction, its made for drawing oil out of most anything. I keep both my tractor and all my other equipment greased at all times,I wont it to last me a lifetime, maybe it will I see alot of tractors around here that are much older than me.

Run your KingKutter till you wear it out and then replace it with whatever you're inclined to buy. The Woods and Landprides are fine mowers but I don't personally think that they are twice as good as a KingKutter and that's the price ratio between the the Woods and the KingKutter. The KingKutter actually is heavier than the the comparable model Woods.

Thanks Jerry, ill take your advice.I take really good care of my equipment, all under a shed, I blow my King Kutter off after I use it and paint the whole bottom with oil. Never know the King Kutter may last me as long as a Woods or a Landpride.

I agree totally with Jerry. Just cutting grass a King Kutter should last along time. Especially the way you treat it.

Hope this helps
