jj: On this one I read your responces before reading your question. At first I thought the guys were being awfully rough on you. Now that I have read your question,I've changed my mind. Quite clear to me who the BOZO is.

You may think a plow is a simple instrument and that any idiot can run one. Not so, true you drive the country side and you can see a lot of plowing done by bozos such as yourself. My thoughts are that with an attitude such as you have, you will never make a good plowman. The plow is a very complex instrument, and certainly should never be put in the hands of a BOZO.

First you look way off into the field, clear to the other end. Spot something to sight in to, lets say a nice big fat birds nest.

Now start yout tractor and lower the plow and drive as straight as possible, right towards that nest.

Keep going.... a little further..... SPLAT!!!!
Bullseye!, Ran right over that birds nest, good job!

Now thats a days work!

When we bought this farm, doing a good job of plowing was a mystery. My folks both grew up on farms, but by the time I was born, we lived in town. My Dad would borrow the neighbors AC C to plow the garden, but I was too little to pay much attention to that.

If he is just at a dopey kid thinking that there really are dumb farmers, he should put in a little garden and learn a little about where his food comes from.

Best bet is to find an older neighbor farmer who can answer questions and maybe help you get the plow set up right. Otherwise, see if your public library can get a book named 'Successful Small Scale Farming' by Karl Schwenke. It has a diagram of what Neb. Cowman is talking about.

Also, you'll have to sharpen up your style or they'll pick on you here.

Attach plow to tractor. Drive to edge of field. Lower plow. Drive tractor forward. Raise plow. Repeat.

First of all this is not the venue to make light of an honest question. The first thing to do when you go to plow a field is to be sure your plow shares are as smooth and clean as possible so that your plow will turn over the soil properly. If the surface of the plow share is not smooth it will take a while plowing for the surface of the plow share to scour itself clean. Plow such that the plow throws the dirt to your right. But remember that you can't throw the dirt uphill. So if tou have sloping ground plow so that the plow throws the dirt downhill. If you have traction problems may need to fill rear tires with liquid. Be sure the plow you use is not too big for the size of your tractor. Don't plow areas that are too steep...don't want to have accident with your tractor! When you are through plowing clean the dirt off the plow shares and coat them liberally with a layer of grease to prevent rusting...then the plow will plow better next time you go to use it. Hope this will help to answer your question.

It depends on the lay of the land, shape of the field, slope, etc. If its a flat square shape, just start at a corner, going counter clockwise, drop the plow in drive down the edge, throwing the soil out, lift at the first corner, turn, continue, questions?

Hey BOZO, heres how YOU plow a field, Go to your kitchen silver ware drawer, get a spoon and turn the field over. The rest of us use a tractor and plow, pretty self explanitory

who's the bozos?us or you?
You plow a field in "lands" either by a back furrow, dead furrow or combination. Give us a little more information and we might be able to walk you through it.

Or you can use a "roll-over" plow and just start on one side of the field and drive back and forth with "no lands!"

But on the other hand, anybody that has the place to, but still has to ask how to do as basic a task as how to plow, really doesn't need to be out there does he? What's he gonna do when it comes time to plant. That's scary.

Hey harley1983. What is that the year of the bike you can afford or when you were born?

"but still has to ask how to do as basic a task as how to plow, really doesn't need to be out there does he?"

Wow, an elitist farmer. Never met one of those before. I guess you were born with the talents you are currently displaying?
Does it get lonely at the top or just boring

Everybody has to learn new things. I grew up on this family farm, but I wasn't born with the ability to plow. I had to learn how to do it from my grandpa. However, being insulting towards those you are asking for help is not a good approach.
