I live in Western Pa and am replanting a field with timothy for hay. What would be a good cover crop to seed with the Timothy to keep weeds at a minimum and help get the timothy established? I don't have a drill so I will be using a 3 pt hitch broadcast spreader followed by a roller after the seeds are on. The field is all tilled up and ready for the seed bed.

I'm in southeastern PA and I tried planting a timothy field a few years ago in the spring. After I planted we got hit by a drought and the timothy didn't do anything, the only thing that came up was foxtail. I kept the foxtail mowed and eventually it died off and the timothy came up and I got a nice cutting of hay the next year. I didn't get any hay the summer I planted and looking back I would plant in fall but I was impatient. Right now the field looks really good, I spray it with 2-4-D to kill the broadleaves and the timothy is doing great. I guess the short answer is I wouldn't use a cover crop. I guess you know you won't get a cutting of hay off it this year.

I'm with Kyhayman on this one. If you are going to try to plant this spring then don't add competition to it. Plant the timothy alone

I'm not sure in your climate but here in KY timothy planted in the spring is almost a certain receipe for failure. Of all the grasses it is one of the most difficult to spring establish. Most any cover crop will make it worse (too much competition for light and water. I would plant oats/soybeans/ or forage sorghum and then plant timothy in the fall. "Your results may vary"

I'd use oats and then a couple weeks before it was ripe I'd cut it and bale it. It makes pretty good hay.
