NH 270 Baler questions

What is the proper tension for the knotter brake? I am replacing the pads that were grease-covered. The book instructs you to not set them too tight or it will shear the knotter shear bolt, and not too loose, because it will allow the knotter to move and it will shear the flywheel shear bolt. Is there an easy way to check the drag on it, maybe by disconnecting the drive chain and turning the knotter by hand to adjust the drag? If so, how much should there be?

I am replacing all of the bearings on the plunger and 2 of the wear strips in the chamber. Is there anything I should know, other than following the book?

Is there an aftermarket source for decals for this machine? They are no longer available from CNH.

Also, what are the best teeth to use on a NH 56 Rake, rubber or steel? Are the ones sold by Tractor Supply any good?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott Goff

Ok Scott, let's try to tackle these issues. 1. There is no easy or book method to set knotter brake. Just have a nice drag on it and that will be good enough. 2. Nothing unusual about plunger bearings or rails. 3. I don't know where to find New Holland decals aftermarket. 4. Please don't buy aftermarket rubber rake teeth. If you have money to throw away on them, please mail some to me.(LOL) Steve

All of you know how much I shop at Agri-Supply but the NH rake teeth are less than 50 cents different in cost and they are better than the aftermarket teeth. If you need to replace all of the teeth that would mean less than $50 and they are better.

Kelly C around these parts found some decals - on ebay I believe. Might want to do a search here or watch for him, he might have some advise.

For my side rake, I buy metal rake teeth from Runnings. Pretty good, about a buck each. I got some of the 69 cent teeth from TSC. They are not hardened, twist up into a pretzel. Yuk. Worthless. Now, these stores change their suppliers regularly. I suggest you shop around, buy a few, see what works & what doesn't. There is _certainly_ a difference in quality. I have 3 different colors of teeth on my rake, all work fine. Don't think any of those TSC cheapies lasted a year tho. The hardened ones like to break - brittle. But the soft ones bend - that's really worthless. I suppose the OEM teeth would be better, but I rake a lot of uneven ditchbank & rough fields (straw) which is going to break 10-20 teeth a year no matter what I put on.

I have no experience with the rubber teeth, but I hear most OEM have a joint under the rubber, and the cheapies you can find do not. And this does make a difference.

Unlike Shovelman; I like to hear the teeth when they are set to low, or if I hear nothing they could be too high! That is certainly not to say He is wrong; Just a freindly difference of taste!

On the rake teeth, I dont like the ones from tractor supply. They are cheaper, but dont last nearly as long. They will work if you are on a budget though. I prefer rubber because sooner or later something on the rake will get bent. With metal teeth you will hear "click....click....click" as it runs. Rubber teeth keep it quiet.
