I have an 18' disk and I want to put a chain drag on the back for smoothing out new hay fields. I want to be able to take it off when it is not needed. I was thinking for 2 10' sections with two and a half feet of chain every 6- 8 inches. If any one has done this or has an idea please respond. I have used regular drags but I want this so I don't have to make more passes. Need to cut down on fuel costs.

I have used heavy wire cattle panels folded over double. They are about 16 feet long so cut 2 to 9 feet and place a weight on it. You will be suprised how well it works.

I'd hook the drag up behind the disk. Or get a packer to hook up behind the disk. The chains won't do much, at least not in my soils.

Rich, this won't do the job your wanting as I have tried a simuliar setup and the result was very unsatisfying. I think you would be better served to try and find a used soil conditioner that will fit your disk. It is also detachable. The problem with chains is they just won't have the weight you'll need and it will not be cheap to build. The other way is just hitch one of the drags you've used behind the disk. However if this is what you want you can do it anyway as it sounds like you've already made up your mind. Good luck,,,,

I use a wooden "float" made of three 2x8 planks lapped together. Crushes the clods and leaves a nice seedbed.
