Im interested in a good older sp mower conditioner and trailer. What models are good. What should I stay away from? Thanks

There are probably the most Owatanna swathers around here. But that is because the company was right near here. Harder to find parts now.

But are you looking for a swather or SP hay conditioner/ haybine/ moco/ hay windrower? Where I live a swather is for grain, something for hay gets a slightly different name. All the same thing, you want a swather with conditiong rolls.

I guess I'd look for something in good condition, more than a specific brand. Looking at hand levers & clutches, an industrial engine (Ford is common, Wisconsin on the older ones) a sickle driver that's usually just a long pivoting lever, big V-belt variable drive? About 10-12' wide? Look for good tight fittings on the sickle drive, good vbelt, good sickle, good canvas, and so on. Frankly, many of them were built very much the same, or even from the same few companies.

If you do your own mechanical work, look for something you can scrounge up parts for. If you have work done for you, look a little more for something it's easy to get parts for.

Hesstons are common here in KS, any experience w/ them and their slant 6?

I have an 8200 Hesston swather, sloppy six chrysler engine, no cab, 12 foot cut with stub guards. Overall I give it a thumbs up. Very good conditioning and never plugs unless I pick up a stone. If the stone is the right size, it will get stuck between the augers and the conditioner rolls. I would rather have the diesel and cab because dandilions and dead leaves fly into your eyes, but it still is a good machine

Keep in mind that there is a significate difference in a SP mower conditioner(sometimes called a swather) & a swather. There are thousands of swathers that are use in grain operations that don't condition and aren't designed to. As far as swathers go I would say Hesston is one of the more common with up to 30' cut. These could be used for haying operatiions I guess if you condition behind it. Good luck.....

The most common and most used in the US is NH. I have had a NH 1495 for several years and have been well satisfied with its proformance. Operate and service in accordance with the manual requirements. Most of the are 12' or more cut. If I were buying another one I would get a newer model simply because of the rolls. Check NH North America web site and search used ag equipment aand you can get some pricing information and see what is available through NH dealers. Good luck..

I've heard the old Gehl SP units were pretty good. They were very popular in the Imperial valley hay operations in Southern CA. Haven't made them for probably 15 years there is another one out of canada but I don't remember the name

I know where there is a Case IH 8830 in excellent condition. It has a cab wit a/c and radio. For power it has a 4 cylinder Cummins diesel with approx. 2000 hours on it. There is a 12' sicklebar header on it. I'm not sure how much you are looking to spend on it but the owner was asking $10000 or BO Email me if you are interested.
