Vermeer 504G

Can anyone tell me about the production years of a 504G? I know of a guy who has one and would be willing to part with it but I heard he said it will need a gear box. I haven't stopped to talk to him and look at it but will do so the next time I'm up that way. Anyone have an idea of what a gear box would cost for one? Can it be rebuilt or would an entire box have to be purchased?
A 504G makes a 4' wide x 5'tall bale, correct? Any info appreciated,

We have a 504G. My son rebuilt the gear box last year. Only cost about $100 and took 2 to 3 hours total. We've replaced several bearings some sprockets and all the roller chains. All new belts last year also. With new pickup teeth it ran as well as it did the day it came out of the box. I think we bought it in 1986, it had been demo'ed the summer before. Our Vermeer dealer is very good and has always had the parts we needed. Two years ago we broke one of the big main tension springs and we were exspecting to pay $200 or more for it, Cost=$70.00. Parts seem less costly than the neighbors are paying to keep their JD's, NH's, Hesston's, and NI's running.

You are correct about the bale size. The G was made in the Mid 80's. The gear box can be rebuilt. I believe that I new one is around $500. Probably about half a days work to rebuild counting in an out.
