I am looking for a small tedder to use on approximately 20 acres of timothy/grass hay. I have found new 2 basket Kuhns for $1800, 2 basket Vermeers for $1900, and 2 basket Tonutti's for $1950, all rotating tedders. I also found a used reel type tedder, a Pequea model, for $1350 in new condition. I have never seen a reel type tedder before this. Are they just as good as a spin type model? Or am I better off paying the extra for a spinner? I use a disc mower to mow with and want to use the tedder as a conditioner to speed drying time. I can't seem to visualize how the reel type would help the hay if it was rained on. Like I said though I have never seen this type before but it is 600 bucks cheaper to buy. What do you guys think? By the way, I am in wetern Pa.

Thanx,

Jerry

We had a couple New Holland 254 rake/tedders a while back. I guess now it's called a 255 rake/tedder. They did an excellent job, both tedding and raking. It might be worth your time to check into a clean, used one (a new one is most likely more than you're looking to spend).

Jerry you have a disc mower and now you want to purchase a 2 rotor tedder? In the 1980's we sold mostly 2 rotor tedders. We sold over 100 a year back then but in the 1990's they started trading them in for the 4 rotor tedders that were manual fold and now we see the 4 rotor tedders being traded in for the hydraulic fold 4 & 6 rotor tedders. You can purchase a good used 2 rotor tedder for $400-$700. You can also find good used manual fold 4 rotor tedders at great prices. If you purchase a new 2 rotor tedder you will be taking a step back. Be careful of Galfre, they have 3 different styles. The Galfre GTS Series tedders may look the strongest but they have bearing problems due to weak bearing mounts.

Just found 2 more models of 2 basket tedders to throw into the mix. A sitrix and a Galfre models. Both can be shipped to my doorstep for under $1200. What do you guys think about these models as well as the others I mentioned before?

Thax for replies so far

Hi, Buy a 4 star tedder, it will save you money in the long run. I have had both, once you have the 2 star, you will be wanting a 4 star. Kuhn makes the 4 star that JD and NH sell. I buy parts for my NH 163 (same as a JD 752) at either dealer. Bill

I bought a NH 162, which I believe is really a 4 basket Kuhn rebadged, for $1000 at a consignment auction. It's about 15 years old, but has done a good job for me. A 4 basket will do 2 windrows at once, which is nice and quick.

We have a Grimm that my buddy thought we just had to have last year..... .....It is darn near a Pequea reel like you mentioned. IMO it is nothing more than scrap iron considering what we paid for it. We have an old NI roll bar rake/tedder on steel that was my landlords, but was sold at his farm sale to amish guys, who gave it back to us for hauling an engine home to them. I can get that old thing to tedd hay like crazy. Does a good job and it also rakes super nice when your done tedding..... ...For 20 acres I'd definitly consider one. They can be had pretty cheap and you can still get teeth for them.

That is my story and I'm stickin't to it!(Smile)

I think $1800 is a good price for a Kuhn. I have used a kuhn rake, 4 star tedder, disc mower, and discbine. I thought that they were all good machines. I'd say the kuhn is the best quality, and here it is the best price as well.

I would buy the Pequea. I have one, and it works really well. I use it on about 60 acres 3X a year. Don't get a ground drive model. The PTO ones work the best. My only complaint is that there are about 30 grease fittings on the thing, and you can't keep seals in the gear box.

Adjusting ground speed and pto speed does make a big difference depending on what you want to do. In rained on hay, run the tractor faster and go slower. In alfalfa, go faster and slow down the rpm to stop leaf loss.... Once you egt used to it they do a great job.
