Fert box on 2 row planter, problems

I recently bought a Gandy row bander for an old Dearborn planter. The bander was several years old, but unused. Everything turns freely on it, including the paddle at the bottom of the hopper. I made a frame to hold the box securely on the planter, and connected the sprocket from the bander to the press wheel axle. Then I raised the rear wheels off the ground and turn them. Everything turns freely and smoothly.

I added about 1 pound of DAP fert in the bin, and the wheel was very difficult to turn. Dap was coming out powdered from one of the exit holes. It sounded like I was crushing gravel. I removed the fert from the bin, and everything turned freely. I checked the chains, sprockets, etc and everything seemed to be fine. Then I added 2 lbs of DAP to the bin. It took two hands and lots of effort to even get the wheel to turn a little bit. I even had the outflow rate of the bander set at 75 lbs/acre. The DAP came out much faster than when it did when the setting was 15 lbs/acre.

Any ideas what could be wrong? Is DAP not suitable for use in a row bander?

Gandy row banders are made to apply dry herbicide or insecticide. They are not intended for fertilizer. You need a fertilizer applicator for that. What you are trying to do is something like planting potatoes with a grain drill.
