I have a Model L Series I manure spreader. What do the left and right levers operate? (looking at the front) Also, it will not go forward, but will go backwards, with a ratcheting noise. The guy I got it from says it is jammed somehow when trying to go forward. Any ideas? Thanks

It is the bed chain or something else when moved forward. I can move it backwards, and a ratchet clicking comes from the wheels. It rolls backward very easily.

Your axle is frozen with rust probably. I just bought a Model R and it did the same thing. Am still trying to free up the axle. Penetrating fluid, heat and beat.

The lever with many notches controls the apron speed. (chain with slats in floor) The lever with only two notches turns the beaters on and off. Don't know why it's jammed, I'd have to be able to look at it, but check the drive gears, chains and sprockets and make sure the ratchet pawl isn't stuck.

The ratcheting is because you do not want the chains to operate in reverse, forcing the load to the front of the spreader. You will probably need to dismantle and lube the gear boxes. The chain will really bind if it gets rusty. If you cannot bend it between links, it is bound up. We used to have to spray the links and pound on them to free them. Good luck and let us know how you make out.
