OK it looks like it is time to upgrade to a rotary hay rake. How about some comments on if there is a significant difference between brands/models? Recommendations to follow a 488 mo/co?
Thanks

I assume you are talking about a boom with several vertical multifingered "windmill" type things. They can be double (vee'd) or single and drag or 3 pt.

I had one and didn't like it over a parallel bar. Reason was it only raked bermuda, not haygrazer sorghum (fingers would bend back) and when the wind was blowing (always) the hay that it would rake would blow onto the wheels and stay there and just make a big mess.

Locals use them when they have a distant hay field in 3 pt. Very convenient but still has the mentioned limitations.

I sold mine, went back to parallel bars and am very happy.

I have used a kuhn rotary rake. It is awesome. It was their smallest model, and is about perfect for a 9' haybine. It makes real nice fluffy windrows, so the hay keeps drying in the windrow. It also rakes very clean. Most rolabars make some noise once a tooth gets bent, but not with a rotary. Since they are pto driven, they also work better in wet hay, before balage or chopping. The other advantage is that if you want to turn a windrow, it is much easier than with a bar rake. Overall, i really like the rotary rakes.

Thanks for the reply and information
BYW why is it easier to "turn a windrow" than with a bar rake?

Because you have more control of the movement of the hay. My rotary rake does not scatter the windrow like my old rolabar rake. It also does not compact the wet hay and "rope it". It is very hard to drive along side the windrow and control how far the rolabar will turn the windrow often times turning it right back over to the bottom. With the rotary just straddle the windrow and the bottom hay ends up on the top of the new windrow. You can also travel faster with the rotary rake and make a perfect windrow.
