I have a John Deere 790 I am looking at Deere bush hog LX5 or 6 is there any reason i need a slip clutch. Or just go with a sheer pin. Does a slip clutch ever completly break

The first time you sheer a pin on the point of the farm as far from the tools as you can go you'll wish for the slip clutch, the second time you'll wish again, the 3rd time you sheer it (you'll remember pins and tools this time) and you step in a bumble bee or yellow jackets nest changing it you'll buy the clutch.

Yes, slip clutches fail completely over time and slippage. On the Rhino SE 15 I had I got 3-4 years, on my BushHog 2615L 4 years so far on the origional. JD hay baler needs new discs every autumn.

David

Seems you have your clutches set too weak to burn up that fast?

Anyhow, it is most common for slip clutches to 'fail' by freezing up. You'll never know it until you need it, and then something else breaks. That is the downfall of a slip clutch. If you are good at maintenence & loosen them every spring & make sure they work, they are better.

i have a j. deere mx 6 . 300 hours.
i hit concrete curb causing the shaft to shear off in the gear box. i know the slip clutch was working. why wouldn`t the slip clutch help to prevent this. damages are 1000.00

Good reminder about loosening them and making sure they are free. Guy borrowed my mower one time to shred stalks and ruined a gear box by not doing it.

I'm not real sure what is happening on the baler. Springs are set to spec and I even replaced them the 3rd year. Its on a 336, I'm pushing capacity on the baler (and the mower for that matter). Labor availability kills me, try to stretch the machines rather than having to hire another employee.
