disc setup after plowing?

What would be the best way to setup a disc after plowing this spring? Should I set the gangs more straight or more angled? Should the 1st pass be done deep or shallow? I have about 10 ac. that has not been worked in several years I first mowed then plowed, pretty heavy sod though.

I'm going to offer a little bit different advice. If your plow turned the sod under pretty good, you may want to try a light disking without too much angle or too deep for the first pass or two so you don't turn up a lot of sod. Then let it get rained on and settle some and be a bit more aggressive. It really depends on the plowing. Sometimes a deep disking leaves a rough sodded seedbed.

Typically, after plowing( and dragging to smooth up the surface) you would 'rough' disc(more angle on the gangs), let it set a few days(moisture dependent) then 'double cut'(make two passes) with slightly Less gang angle. Sometimes I'll lessen the gang angle after the first pass to get a fairly uniform soil surface or'condition'. Also, as Tom aptly descibed, it may vary with your specific disc AND soil type. This is all based on what you want to do with it afterwards; seedbed, drill, plant, sow grass seed,etc. Sod ground usually is a bit "rougher" to prepare, FWIW.

In no way would I disagree with a Bigdog, but I have actually had a slightly different experience with disking. I have a Linebaugh Line disk that I pull behind my Ford 2000. If I slant the disks as far as they will go, they actually have a tendency to push the trash and dirt ahead of them instead of cutting them. I have found that this particular disk cuts deepest when it is set just a little bit slanted rather than a lot slanted.

You might start out one way, and if it doesn't look like it's cutting as well as you'd like, change the setting and see if it's any better.

The more it's angled, the more it will cut. I'd cut as deep as you can and still pull decent. We always raised the transport wheels and let the disc cut as deep as it would on the first pass.
