I'm in the market for one. My dad had one years ago. It was a Danhaueser (SP)It was a good, heavy duty auger. I prices one today. It would set me back over $1800, with one auger (9"). WOW! I found a "cheap-o" for $385. I would rather pay something in the middle of that price range. I'll be using it on a 60 HP tractor. I've got over 500 fence posts to dig. OK, Where am I going with this? Who has a good one? What brand is it? Let me know which ones to stay away from. I don't like junk. I'd rather pay for something that'll be around a while. Let's hear some suggestions. John

IDF - I bought a "Greenline" from my JD dealer at the time (no longer in business - urban sprawl) with a 9" auger about 6 years ago. Drilled quite a few fence post holes with it and it worked just fine on the back of the JD3020. Consistently drilled 36"+ deep. In wet ground, it would/could screw itself straight down if you didn't pay attention to it; in dry, hard clay we had to stand on it. All in all, it has given me good service.

I bought a cheapo PHD some years ago. I hated it right off, as it was hard to get started, and liked to drift a bit. I sold it and bought a BushHog PHD, and what a difference!!! Now, i like the BushHog digger, and wish i had bought it the first time around!!! CJ

I have an auger from Northern Tool and have been pleased with the strength of it. I would suggest that you get one that will handle greater then just a 9" auger. It should handle at least a 12" or 14". Once you have it you'll find uses like "gee a shed would be nice".

Woods makes nice unit. I'm looking at an 1160. Bush Hog also makes nice augers.

Stay away from the el'cheapo "farm star" diggers. A friend who works at the local farm and home showed me several broken gearboxes that he had laying in the store room. I have an older ford digger with 12" auger,it has a huge gear box like the danhuser.

I need the auger, and not a driver. This is for a "side job". The country club/golf course I work at, is putting up a new fence on one side of the property. They are willing to pay me $5 a hole, to punch all the post holes. The groundskeeper will erect the fence. They'll concrete the 2" post's in place. They need 520 9" hole. The way I see it, I'll end up with a post hole auger, and they'll pay for it. Anyone ever hear of a brand called "Greenline"? I found one of them at a good price. Looks like a decent piece. John

Hey John,

If you are interested in a driver, I picked up a Farm Star (like a Shaver, parts interchange) 8" for right at the 'longest sale in history'. I drove 30- 10" cedar posts and 10 8' sections of telephone poles with it to try it out. Got a 10" last week (for righter :-)).

John, have dug untold thousands of holes....no rocks, but tons of tree roots. One of my "best buys" was a Danhauser 3-point hitch HYDRAULIC digger. As I recall, it set me back about $12-1400 bucks about 15 years ago. Can't imagine using a shaft-drive digger after using this thing.....for my particular application. If it hangs under a root or the teeth get clogged with grass, just hit the "reverse" on the hydraulic lever.

Well, you won't hurt any of them with hp since you will shear your auger bolt 1st. To me a 9" auger is worthless since I use 7" corner, gate, and brace posts set in concrete. If your not setting in concrete I'd put my money in a driver. I can drive 7" with my sheaver driver but don't except line posts. It's a matter of personal choice.

I bought a nice Rhino post hole digger with a 9" auger brand new last year for $750.00 I've drilled about 100 holes in the toughest clay on the planet, with no problems so far.

Now there's a brand I hadn't thought of. I've owned a couple Rhino mowers in the past. They were built like an anvil. I'll check into a Rhino post hole auger tomorrow. There's a dealer near here, that carries their line. Thanks. John

have you considered a post driver? I haven't put my auger on in 2 years and set a tracter-trailer load of posts every year.
