Finish Mower blades, sharpness?

I bought a Woods RM600 Finish mower, used. It had new blades and I checked them and they were sharp. In the Operators Manual on page 12 under Mowing Tips it says, "remember, sharp blades produce cleaner cuts and use less power." In the same Operators Manual on page 16 under Blade Sharpening it says "do not sharpen blade to a razors edge, but leave 1/32 to 1/16" blunt edge". So, I give up, what should I do???? And why would I even consider leaving a finish mower blade with a blunt edge?

Also, while sharpening, you need to check to see if the blade is balanced, if you put a nail in a vice, hang the blade on the nail from the center hole of the blade, it should stay level, if not, you need to take a little more off on one side until it's balanced, I'm assuming an unbalanced blade will vibrate the shaft causing the bearings to fail.

I only use a file now for my lawnmower blades most of the time, sometimes I'll use a grinder if I get a good sized ding, but for the most part, if your not running into stones or anything hard enough to gouge the edge, I've found that a file does a better job ( takes a little longer ) in maintaining the shape of the cutting edge of a lawn mower size blade

You want the blades sharp, but not like a knife. If the blades are sharpened to a razor edge the grass "bleeds" off chlorophyl and will leave a brown tip on the grass blades, something similar to a razor cut on your finger. This is the way it was explained by a horticulturist for a golf course I work at,but they want picture perfect fairways with no discoloration. If you aren't quite that anal, sharpening them to a knife edge won't last, takes what little temper the blades have out,and the blade tip speeds are so high now, that it is not necessary to give a quality cut.

Mike that horticulturist is dead wrong.

The reason a golf course does that is to slow down the grow back. It can do alot of damage to the turf to beat the grass down instead of a clean smooth cut.

A smooth clean cut looks better for the lawn, and also does much less damage to the grass plant.

Dull mower blades thrash and beat the tops of the grass blades off. This leaves a ragged top which becomes straw colored and gives the lawn a tan colored hue. Ragged tops are prime points of entry for many fungal pathogens and small turf insects.

I grind mine Sharp...!!! Just don't over-heat the edge...!! Don't take off any more than necessary.. Have a spare set, so you can already have a sharp set ready to go on...saves time...

I keep 2 extra sets of blades and all 3 sets stay sharp.

Scroll down near the bottom of this Aggie link and it gives the *why* on keeping blades sharp.
