i worked for a guy a couple years ago that had 2 14' disks. One we pulled with a 3688IH(113hp). The other we pulled with a Ford 7740(86hp). The ford is 4wd but didnt need it unless it was wet. 86hp and 14' disk worked well. The IH was way over kill. im sure it would have pulled more but it was getting older and alot(i mean ALOT) of hours. If it was o/h it would easily pulled 20'.

As far as the size your tractor would pull, 115 HP will handle 14' without much effort. You could most likely pull something in the 20' range if you need to. Disc prices are across the board. I've bought and sold a good many of 'em. Older ones in the 10-14' range, run anywhere from $300 to $1200 depending on condition. Certain brands sell better. IH and Deere usually bring the best price in my area. As a general rule, older disc's will pull easier than newer ones. Most of the newer ones are heavier, as they were sold for higher horsepower tractors. Newer disc's in the 10' -14' range are kind of scarce. Most all of the disc's sold new in the last 20 years are for BIG tractors. I've seen 30'+ disc's sell for less that a good 10'er. They're sort of like plows..... sort of a dying item. Good luck with your farming. John

Rich, I've been pullin two disks with my 966.... 1 st, a Krause B-211 with 18in disks it is no problem with my ol 966 or any lesser hp tractor to a SM. This disk is a finishing plow, about 12 ft wide.
2nd, is an IH 500 , same width as the Krause, but it has 22in disk. Also it is a heavier primary disk...It is a good match with the 966, here in Central Texas with our heavier clayey soils.
The Krause, was gotten through a trade...1 cord of wood, for the disk.
The IH was $3200. And it is worth every penny, with the work it turns out.
Hope this helps,
John A.

Rich be sure to check the blades for wear, I paid 250.00 for a disc and then paid 225.00 for a front set of blades.(Fast Hitch, you buy what you can find)We just bought a 16ft for scrap and payed 225.00,needs blades and the frame is broke but it has 1000.00 worth of tires, wheels and steel in it.

I used to pull an 18' IH with an Oliver 1950T and always wished I had a 20 footer. That tractor was about the same HP. I now pull a IH 490 disc 24'-9" with a harrow with my White 4-180.
I'd say with 115 HP you should be looking for about 6 more feet of disc to pull. Larry

You could pull a 20' disc with that tractor easily. I pulled a 15' JD with my 65hp 656 easily in 2nd gear. You are better to pull a larger disc at slower speed than a small disc at higher speed.

Here is the scenario, 14' JD and a 14' IH both with 2' fold downs on each set of discs at auction this weekend wondering how much to bid? Both in good condition.

I know around here JD disks usually bring alot less then other makes..... ....They don't seem to do as good of job as the others do. IH's and Oliver's are the ones that bring the $$$$ here.

If it was me, I'd go with Oliver.

In PA, a good 12-14 foot J.D. disk will often bring $1500 or more. It depends on the model and condition. A lot of disks are worn out or broken and welded and parts/repairs often cost more than it's worth. I pull a 13 ft. J.D.110 with a 4020 in limestone clay on the ridges. It's just about the right size for my conditions.

I pull a 12' with 86 hp pretty easy, wouldnt hesitate to pull 14'. I gave $700 for a 12' IH in decent shape 4 years ago (and paid too much but it was a friend who had lost his farm lease).
