Putting #2 thrower on JD 14t baler

I have a 14t baler with a chute on it, but would like to put a thrower on it. I would like to put on a #2 thrower. I thought about a #30 but i dont think the baler is worth the added work of modifiying it to fit and the cost of the better thrower. Has anyone used a #2 before, or put one on a 14t? How heavy of a bale can the #2 throw? Will it be tough to find a #2 in working condition? Thanks for the input!

Well, I made my 14T drop the bales on their side and just come around with a bale picker-upper that mounts with 2 pins to the side of my hay wagons, works better than most throwers. I had a 24T with a newer thrower, and that dumb hydraulic system didn't bleed down when I shut the PTO off(valve stuck) and that damn pan caught me in the side of my jaw, sold it 2 weeks later when I came home. If you want a bale picker-upper, I know that Bush Hog, New Holland, IHC, and Kewanee made quite a few good ones that can usually be found sitting in fence rows and old hay barns, and I bought mine for $25.00 each in almost working condition.

Josh; Forget the thrower and use bale basket wagon. I have been thrower route,and used bale basket wagons over ten years. I would never go back to thrower. But I would still go to basket wagons if needed. I run accumulator system now. Just my two cents

If you want to put a #2 thrower on your 14T, it depends on your area how hard they will be to find.

I'm located in Wisconsin, where a lot of 14Ts and 24Ts were used. When I wanted to find structural parts for my #2, I ran an ad in the local shopper. I found two ejectors in good shape that were pretty cheap, but still had good parts to use.

By the way, JD still sells a lot of the bushings, shock absorbers, and other wearable parts for the #2 ejector. The price isn't always the best, but at least you can get replacements.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I know the 14T uses a different ejector drive than the 24T. I broke down and bought a parts manual for the #2 from JD ($30, ouch), which came in handy figuring out what works on what models, etc.

Were your experiences with a #2 as bad as Tim and Jim? I was pretty enthused, but after reading their posts am having second thoughts about a #2. Thanks for the input.

To be honest, I haven't had a chance to try out the #2 that came with my baler (so my experiences may be as bad as others have suggested). The thrower needed some structural work, which is why it had been taken off by the previous owner. I guess I'm willing to give it a try when I get it put back together. A friend of mine worked around a #2 and didn't think it was too bad. Deere made over 20,000 of them, so they must have worked OK for a while.

I'd have to say Tim is right on the mark. Get rid of the 14T and go buy a baler with a thrower already on it (preferrably something other than a #2 JD thrower). I used to have one on my 24T and sold it for $50 (I was glad to get that for it). The 24T was a good baler, but the thrower only worked good occasionally and it required a lot of attention. Another suggestion: forget throwers altogether and buy yourself a bale basket.

don't waste your time. Parts aren't available, it only throws 35 lb bales, and it has a lot of mechanical hocus-pocus that will be well-worn on any #2 you find. If you really want an ejector, buy a baler with one already on it and park the 14T. You'll be better off in the long run in my opinion.

I forgot to mention that any JD bale ejector is fussy about bale length. If your baler is no longer capable of making brick-like bales of uniform length because of wear, an ejector is not a good idea.
