What do you guys use to protect wagons that are left outside? I have heard of using used motor oil, but i have also heard that over time it is worse than just leaving them uncoated. Any other cheap wood preservatives? Thanks.

Boiled linseed oil will work, and will bring the natural color out. It will have to be reapplied like paint to give continuous protaction.

Heat the oil on a burner then brush it on this lets it penetrate deeper into the wood fibers. To get a little better protection it probably needs 5 to 8 coats, depending on where you live. Give the oil time to oxidize. Direct sunlight will heat this oil and cause it to ooze out of the surface,a coat of paint over this seems to help it last longer.
